On June 2, 2008, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) employees and partners will participate in the 5th annual NOAA Restoration Day at York River State Park. NOAA Restoration Day is one of the largest voluntary federal employee sponsored environmental stewardship events in the Bay watershed. NOAA employees throughout Hampton Roads will come together to restore habitat and cleanup shoreline at the park.
Approximately 40 NOAA employees led by the NOAA Deputy Assistant Secretary Timothy R. E. Keeney will be joined by partners from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and Virginia's Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Reserve. York River State Park is part of NOAA's National Estuarine Research Reserve System, a network of protected coastal sites that are managed by states with funding and technical assistance provided by NOAA.
Restoration activities that will take place include planting native vegetation to prevent shoreline erosion, clearing trash and debris from the park's shoreline, and restoring coastal access trails. This will be the first year that NOAA Restoration Day has been held at York River State Park.
