Native Oyster Restoration Monitoring (NORM) Program

NOAA is a partner in the Virginia Interagency Oyster Team, along with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE), the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC), and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF). In 2000, the ACOE initiated a long-term native oyster restoration effort in the lower Chesapeake Bay, and in 2004 NOAA was directed by Congress to fund a restoration monitoring program Outboundthrough VIMS. From 2004 through 2007, NOAA provided $6.9 million in funding to VIMS.

The members of the Virginia Interagency Oyster Team meet on a monthly basis to coordinate their oyster restoration efforts in the lower part of the Bay.
